SHADE & LIGHT

A Bass Duo

ABOUT

Feeling Something.

Shade and Light is the inventive and alluring duo project of double bassists
Megan McDevitt and Betsy Soukup. Close friends since childhood, the pair decided to
form a duo after the premiere of Boundaries, a piece written by Betsy for one of
Megan’s dissertation recitals. Their extraordinary chemistry was apparent during the
collaborative composition process and improvised sections of the piece. Megan’s artistic
interests include composition, electronic music, and curating thematic programming that
engages the audience in unconventional, meaningful ways. She attended the Norfolk
New Music Workshop in 2015 and the Atlantic Music Festival’s Future Music Lab in
2017. She currently performs regularly in various new music groups in Buffalo, New York.
Betsy’s artistic focus has been on improvisation, songwriting, and vulnerable
performance aesthetics. She attended the John Adams/David Robertson 21stCentury
American Contemporary Ensemble Workshop and Lucerne Festival in 2013. She
performs free improvised music and her original songs throughout the metro Detroit
area. Both women have doctorates in bass performance from the University of
Michigan. Shade & Light’s goals include creating performances that are
transformative for the audience as well as themselves, collaboratively creating new
works with artists of various disciplines, and engaging with a community of
contemporary and rising artists through performance workshops. Their ultimate goal is to allow audiences to have a moving emotional experience: to feel something.
